The Falling Leaves Maple Raku Urn is a hand-thrown ceramic vessel, handmade in Washington State by a ceramic artist. The maple leaves are carved and finished with your choice of contrasting glaze to highlight the "falling leaves" pattern, then fired in the traditional Japanese method of Raku ceramics.
In Raku firing each piece of pottery is taken from the kiln red hot, the molten glaze silken and glowing. Then it is placed in a bed of straw or leaves in an air-tight container. The dry plant material immediately bursts into flame and the “reduction chamber” is sealed. The flame and the smoking, oxygen starved atmosphere transform the glaze surface creating the unique, seemingly ancient, colors and textures of raku. Thus, each of our one-of-a-kind Raku-fired funeral urns are unique in the particulars of the design and glaze finish.
As these ceramic urns are generally made-to-order, please allow time for your urn to be produced. Often, we can finish and deliver sooner, but if you need the urn by a specific date please contact us and we will make the necessary arrangements, if we are unable to fulfill your request we will notify you within 3 business days. These are handmade urns, and as such shape and colors of each urn will vary slightly.
The Falling Leaves Maple Raku Urn is available in several sizes, starting with Standard (180 cubic inches) and moving up to Large (220 c.i.) and the Companion (375 c.i.) or "double urn" size, which is intended to hold the remains of two individuals. The general rule to follow when figuring size is that 1 lb. healthy body weight equals 1 cubic inch of cremated remains; thus, a 180 lb. individual would need a 180 cubic inch funeral urn.
