What are adult urns?

Urns for ashes are keepsake memorial urns designed to hold the "ashes" or cremated remains of an adult human.

The standard size urn for an adult urn is 200 cubic inches, which is approximately the space needed for an adult who weighed about 200 lbs. See our urn size calculator for more info.

An urn for ashes for adults can be made from a wide variety of materials, including wood, metal, ceramic, glass, marble, and more. Urns can come in many shapes as well, most often in rectangular box shapes or rounded vase-like shapes.

In addition to these full-size urns, we also offer a variety of sizes including:

  • Keepsake urns. Small urns intended to hold a keepsake portion of the remains.
  • Companion urns. Large urns sized to hold the ashes of two people, often a husband a wife.
  • Small urns. Varieties of small size urns include pet urns, child or infant urns, cremation jewelry, and mini keepsake urns.

Use our Urn Size Calculator to help determine the right size for your family's needs.

A simple rule of thumb is that one pound of body weight will result in one cubic inch of ashes after cremation. In other words, a 175 pound person will require an urn with a capacity of about 175 cubic inches or more.

Where can I buy urns for human ashes?

You can buy urns for cremation ashes online or at the funeral home. Online, the best place to purchase cremation urns is Urns Northwest.

Here are some of our very best urns for the ashes or cremated remains of an adult.

1. Cherry Wood Urn & Memory Chest Combo with Art Carving

Made in Oregon from solid cherry wood, this one of our most popular wooden urns. It is both a cremation urn (the lower section) and a keepsake box (the upper section, with hinged-opening lid).

This decorative urn is carved to perfection all the way around with an ornate laser-etched design.

Also available as just an urn with no keepsake top section. In any style, it's been one of our most highly-reviewed urns for ashes for adults for nearly twenty years.

2. 3-Dimensional Inlay Art Urn with Deer

Our wooden inlay art urns are made in the USA from solid wood, are available in your choice of walnut, oak, or maple, and feature a wide array of creative, rustic, and meaningful scenes to honor your loved one.

The Deer Wood Cremation Urn features a deer in the forest, and is available in a variety of box shapes. Ideal to honor a nature lover, hiker, hunter, or animal lover.

3. "Gone Fishing" Memorial Plaque Cremation Urn

An Urns Northwest Original, the Gone Fishing design is the most popular theme in our wall-mounted memorial plaque urn series.

This urn looks like a decorative memorial plaque, and includes the name and dates of your loved one, but it's more than that - it's also a cremation urn.

The ashes are stored between the front and back panels of the plaque, which opens from the top. It's a beautiful way to celebrate your loved one's memory without drawing attention to the remains inside.

Check out the complete collection here, which includes a variety of themes and styles.

4. Together Again Companion Urn (for ashes of two adults)

Longtime companions walk down the road, arm in arm, together again at last. The Together Again Urn is our most popular Companion Urn for two people's remains.
