What are adult urns?
Urns for ashes are keepsake memorial urns designed to hold the "ashes" or cremated remains of an adult human.
The standard size urn for an adult urn is 200 cubic inches, which is approximately the space needed for an adult who weighed about 200 lbs. See our urn size calculator for more info.
An urn for ashes for adults can be made from a wide variety of materials, including wood, metal, ceramic, glass, marble, and more. Urns can come in many shapes as well, most often in rectangular box shapes or rounded vase-like shapes.
In addition to these full-size urns, we also offer a variety of sizes including:
- Keepsake urns. Small urns intended to hold a keepsake portion of the remains.
- Companion urns. Large urns sized to hold the ashes of two people, often a husband a wife.
- Small urns. Varieties of small size urns include pet urns, child or infant urns, cremation jewelry, and mini keepsake urns.
Use our Urn Size Calculator to help determine the right size for your family's needs.
A simple rule of thumb is that one pound of body weight will result in one cubic inch of ashes after cremation. In other words, a 175 pound person will require an urn with a capacity of about 175 cubic inches or more.
